Description

Emerson has a long history of operations in India. How has the company evolved over time in terms of acquiring or shedding businesses?

Emerson has had products available in India through its businesses (some of which have since been divested) as far back as the 1950s when India was taking its first steps toward industrialisation. We first entered India as a direct business entity in the 1980s through joint-venture relationships with several Indian-owned companies followed by a period, in the 1990s, where we grew our investment in India.

 

In 2000, Emerson bought out the Fisher-Rosemount India JV to create Emerson Process Management India – now known as Emerson Automation Solutions.

 

Some of our growth has been through strategic acquisitions such as the recent acquisition of Pentair’s Valves & Controls business. This has helped us add leading technologies and services to our already broad portfolio and allows us to provide our customers around the world with more complete solutions to their toughest challenges.

 

What are the core activities of Emerson in India today?

Today Emerson operates in India through its two business platforms: Emerson Automation Solutions and Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions. 

 

Emerson Automation Solutions helps oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, power generation, and other process and manufacturing companies achieve Top Quartile performance – which includes optimising production, while protecting personnel and the environment and lowering energy and operating costs. 

 

Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions works with the heating, cooling and refrigeration industries to help ensure human comfort and heath, protect food quality and safety, and advance energy efficiency; and our food waste disposer and tools businesses help create sustainable residential and commercial infrastructure.

 

Altogether, we have more than 6,000 employees, 12 manufacturing and five global engineering centres across India. We also have some of our global information technology services for our company operations based in India.

 

What is the scope of Emerson Automation Solutions? Is it just about projects and process industries?

As previously mentioned, Emerson Automation Solutions helps its customers achieve Top Quartile performance. We want to help our customers achieve operations and capital performance in the top 25 per cent of their peer companies, including for safety, reliability, production and energy and emissions. We also are working with companies to adopt new approaches and technologies to transform the way capital projects are designed, engineered and executed. And thanks to our decades of digital automation expertise, we are well positioned to help our customers develop the best strategies for implementing the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) with measurable business performance improvement.

 

The Plantweb offering has changed over the decades. Is the latest avatar fully compatible with the concepts of Industry 4.0?

Our expanded Plantweb™ digital ecosystem is a scalable portfolio of hardware, software, intelligent devices and services that leverage the power of IIoT to expand digital intelligence to the entire manufacturing enterprise. It is very compatible with the concepts of Industry 4.0.

 

Emerson’s Operational Certainty initiative is supported by our Plantweb™ offerings to expand digital intelligence to the entire manufacturing enterprise – providing a framework to achieve top performance in safety, reliability, production and energy.

 

Please elaborate on the Operational Certainty program launched in 2016 and its impact so far.

Emerson’s Operational Certainty is a technology and engineering-based program designed to help industrial companies achieve top performance and recover an estimated USD 1 trillion+ in operational losses globally. We introduced new peer benchmarking insights to bring better perspective on best practices and technologies to achieve Top Quartile performance in the areas of safety, reliability, production and energy management. Top Quartile is defined as achieving operations and capital performance in the top 25 per cent of peer companies.

 

With industry expertise, consulting services, comprehensive automation technologies and Industrial IoT solutions, we help customers extract greater value from their investments. We believe that customers that adopt best practices and strategies can improve their earnings by as much as 15 per cent. We help them identify new approaches that will move the needle on financial performance.

 

What has been the impact of the Make in India campaign on Emerson strategies in India?

We fully support the government’s Make in India program and believe it can be a catalyst to deliver manufacturing growth in India. Over the past six years Emerson has made investments totalling USD 600 million in India to support our businesses there and to provide India-based support for our Middle East and Africa businesses.
