Lightweight construction reduces manufacturing costs by 25%
A research project from Baden-Württemberg has shown that systematic lightweight construction can considerably reduce a machine's costs and resource consumption.

The scientists involved in the project examined the potential for optimizing machine manufacturing in two specific cases, including a corrugated cardboard processing machine at Wilhelm Bahmüller Maschinenbau Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH in Plüderhausen near Stuttgart.
By applying several lightweight principles, manufacturing costs were reduced by 25% while the weight of moving parts fell by 40%. Engineers also expect a 40% reduction in energy costs as a result. The optimized version of the machine is currently under construction and will then be tested in practice.
The associated research project named PoKoGeLe , which stands for potential-discovery, cost and weight savings through lightweight construction in tooling and processing machines, is under the auspices of the State Agency Leichtbau BW GmbH in Stuttgart.
The Institute of Design Technology and Technical Design (IKTD) of the University of Stuttgart, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) are involved in the research project. The project is funded by the Ministry of Economics, Labor and Housing Baden-Württemberg.
